From delicious doughnuts to scrumptious sourdough, experience the best bakeries you simply can’t miss in King’s Cross.
King’s Cross has developed over the years to become one of the most exciting, buzzing areas of London. Some of the best bakeries you’ll find in London are nestled in this part of town. However, it can be easy to miss these gems as they are often found off the beaten path. If you are staying in the area and want an exciting breakfast, need a good spot to wait for your train, or have come to explore the delights of King’s Cross, make sure to visit one (or more!) of these amazing bakeries.
Pâtisserie Deux Amis
If you are ever in the area, make sure that you stop by this little independent café just a few minutes walk away from King’s Cross Station. Tucked away on a little street, it is a true neighbourhood spot that has kept a strong sense of character.
The café itself is beautifully decorated and is wonderfully charming. I recommend the almond croissant and the cherry tart, although you can’t go wrong with any of their cakes, tarts and other delicacies.
It only has a small number of seats and is very popular, so avoid peak times for the best experience. If you are staying in a hotel nearby, I recommend popping over and enjoying a good breakfast or mid-morning snack.
Opening times: Monday to Saturday 09:00 – 17:30, Sundays 09:30 – 14:00.
Two minute walk from The Harlingford Hotel.
Fortitude Bakehouse
Fortitude Bakehouse is the only bakery which makes cakes from sourdough – truly unique and intriguing! It is a craft bakery that also sells single-farm coffee and stone-rolled tea to takeaway.
Visit at breakfast time and enjoy their little fruit and custard brioche, or pop by at lunchtime to sample their amazing sausage rolls. Fortitude Bakehouse also put on a superb afternoon tea, which will leave you very full but very satisfied!
My top recommendation is to try one (or all!) of their block cakes, all made from sourdough. My favourite is the lemon and strawberry syrup block cake.
Opening times: Monday to Friday 07:30 – 15:30, closed Saturday to Sunday.
Six minute walk from The Harlingford Hotel.
Aux Pains de Papy
Aux Pains De Papy is a quaint French bakery that offers baked goods, sweets and sandwiches. It is a small café with limited seating, so take your pastries to go and enjoy them on a stroll.
Each day they bake a fantastic range of pastries, cakes, savoury delights, bread and viennoiseries. If you are looking for something sweet, you can’t do better than their pain aux chocolat aux amandes. If you are hankering for something more substantial, try their croque monsieur. You won’t regret it!
Opening times: Monday to Friday: 07:00 – 16:00, Saturday 08:00 – 12:00, closed Sunday.
Nine minute walk from The Harlingford Hotel.
Miel Bakery
Miel is an independent, French-influenced boulangerie & patisserie. Their small team of professional bakers make all their goods from scratch throughout the day.
What sets Miel apart is their passion for sourcing the finest ingredients. With flour milled in Normandy, chocolate from Valrhona, and butter from Poitou Charentes, each and every pastry is the highest quality.
Although their menu changes with the season, you can expect: croissants, pain au chocolat, pain au raisins, almond croissants, ham/cheese croissants; sourdough breads, cinnamon and cardamom buns, tarts, lemon loaf, kouign amann, cookies and madeleines.
I personally recommend the brown butter and tonka madeleines, which are exceedingly moreish!
If you are interested in brushing up on your baking skills, Miel are planning to run baking workshops from Autumn 2022 onwards. These are likely to be very popular so I recommend booking as soon as dates are released.
Opening times: Monday to Sunday: 07:30 – 18:00.
Sixteen minute walk from The Harlingford Hotel.
Fabrique
Fabrique is an artisanal stone oven bakery. It started in 2008 Stockholm, Sweden, where it grew so popular that it opened new shops in London and New York.
They use fresh, natural ingredients and traditional methods to make artisanal pastries and sourdough bread. Try their amazing blueberry buns or stop by at lunch for a gruyere and kale sandwich.
I recommend getting there before 1-2pm as this place tends to get crowded and things sell out quickly!
Opening times: Monday to Friday: 08:00 – 17:00, Saturday: 09:00 – 16:00, Sunday 09:00 – 16:00.
Seventeen minute walk from The Harlingford Hotel.
Camden Bakery
Camden Bakery is a staple of Camden High Street, and only a short walk from King’s Cross. It has graced locals with scrumptious baked goods and pastries since the 1970’s, and is a family business to this day.
Serving a wide variety of sweet treats, savoury goodies and lunch options, this bakery is not to be missed. In my opinion, their speciality is their doughnuts, which are huge and filled to the brim with custard. I never leave Camden Bakery without one!
Opening times: Monday: 07:30 – 18:00, Tuesday to Sunday 07:00 – 19:00.
Twenty-three minute walk from The Harlingford Hotel.
